Sorry, Texas

Honestly, I did not start out this series to make fun of the state of Texas.  As Counterlight pointed out, much progress is being made.  Houston has an openly gay mayor and President Obama did well in most of the major cities.     However, I could not resist this article from the Texas Tribune entitled:

"Meet the Flintstones"

"Nearly a third of Texans believe humans and dinosaurs roamed the earth at the same time, and more than half disagree with the theory that humans developed from earlier species of animals, according to the University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.

"The differences in beliefs about evolution and the length of time that living things have existed on earth are reflected in the political and religious preference of our respondents, who were asked four questions about biological history and God..."

And 20 years ago, those numbers were a lot higher. I can remember when the regular fights over evolution between The Reverend Criswell of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, and professional atheist Madeline Murray O'Hare would get higher TV ratings than Saturday Night Wrestling.

About 20 years ago, The Southern Baptist Convention tried to force Baylor University in Waco to teach Creationism. The entire science faculty threatened to resign. What finally stopped this fundamentalist takeover was the State of Texas threatened to withdraw accreditation from Baylor Medical School, the largest and most important in the state, if the University taught Creationism.

Hatred for science ends at the emergency room door.
